Shuangyu Island, better known as Double Fish Island, is an artificial ecological island under construction in Zhangzhou Development Zone, which will be built into a new landmark in Xiamen Bay, according to a report by www.fjsen.com.

"Double Fish Island will become a Pearl of the sea, a new landmark in Xiamen Bay,” said Jiang Xi Nan, Deputy Director of Zhangzhou Development Zone Management Committee.

The Double Fish Island project, located on the Da Pan shoals in China Merchants Group Zhangzhou Development Zone Section II, is the first commercial sea project, the first offshore artificial island project approved by the State Council, and currently the largest offshore island project in the world, the report said.

The artificial island, which will feature a design of two dolphins circling each other, boasts a huge investment of 3 billion yuan.

With a total planning area of about 2.2 square kilometres and a radius of 840 metres, the double dolphin-shaped island will cover an area of 222 hectares and enjoy coastline of 11.4 km. The island will require a reclamation volume of 33,370,000 cubic metres.

According to Jiang, the artificial island will be forged into a high-end ecological resort featuring lifestyle, leisure, health and tourism resources. The project, which was started on 5th February, 2010, is scheduled to be finished in 3 years.
