Toyota's new i-ROAD PMV

11 Mar 2013 | Foreign News : Switzerland |
Toyota's new i-ROAD PMV made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, to offer a flexible transport alternative designed for city commute.

Like in a fighter jet, the electric i-ROAD personal mobility vehicle (PMV) houses its two occupants whom are seated in tandem for a range of up to 50km on a single charge. The bike-car hybrid utilises Toyota's 'Active Lean' technology, which reminds us of the Carver, for a safe yet enjoyable driving experience without the need for a helmet to be worn by its occupants.

The EV uses a lithium-ion battery to power two 2kW motors mounted in the front wheels which can be fully recharged from a conventional power supply in just three hours
The i-ROAD is the latest concept to emerge from Toyota's 40 years of research and development of vehicles that use less energy, promote green motoring and practical in meeting people's everyday transport needs.

People using the i-ROAD PMV offers comfort, better weather protection and safety than a traditional motorcycle, but will benefit from low running costs, easy parking and around-town manoeuvrability.

The compact, three-wheeled PMV measures 2,350mm long and stands 1,445mm tall with a 1,700mm wheelbase. At only 850mm, its narrow width is akin to any orthodox two-wheeler which calls for exceptional manoeuvrability through congested traffic, while its compact size offers the convenience of parking up to four PMV's in a single parking bay.

Toyota claims no special skills are needed to pilot the i-ROAD. Unlike a motorcycle, the i-ROAD features a conventional roof like any road car, which allows novelties like, lighting, heating, audio and Bluetooth to be provided.
