Anglers accepted the idea fishing for fun rather than food. In Canada catch and release is mandatory for some species and require the use of barbless hooks to facilitate release and minimize injury.
Today catch and release is practiced by most all anglers, fishing guides, and promoted by fishing based organizations for Muskie, Walleye and Bass ensuring healthy fish populations for the future.
Here is a guideline for the key aspects of catch and release 
Use the correct tackle:
Fish with appropriate rod, reel and line for the species of fish your targeting. When catching a fish you want to minimize the fight time. The greater the time playing a fish the more lactic acid build up and exhaustion sets in for survival. If fishing in cover (weeds) or warmer water use a heavier line than normal to reduce stress for the fish.      
Bring your release tools:
Always carry needle nose pliers, hookouts, jaw spreaders and a small bolt cutter for larger fish. When landing a fish leave the fish in the water for the unhooking process to avoid any handling, if lip hooked a simple flick of the needle nose pliers should remove the hook. If a landing net is used, leave the net in the water when removing or cutting hooks. If the fish has multiple treble hooks embedded from a artificial lure, use the bolt cutter to cut the hooks, replacement hooks are inexpensive. If the hook is lodged deep in the gullet, never pull on the line or try to rip a hook out. Cut the line as close as you can to the hook or the hook itself. Catch and Release Nets:

Never grip a fish by the eye sockets if you intend to release it. By doing so you abrade its eyes, injure the surrounding tissue and may cause blindness

Measuring the Fish:

Pengertian Daerah Penangkapan Ikan

Menurut (Alam Ikan 1) Daerah Penangkapan Ikan merupakan suatu perairan dimana ikan yang menjadi sasaran penangkapan diharapkan dapat tertangkapsecara maksimal, tetapi masih dalam batas kelestarian sumberdayanya.

Sedangkan daerah penangkapan ikan atau sering disebut juga dengan fishing ground adalah suatu daerah perairan yang cocok untuk penangkapan ikan dimana alat tangkap dapat kita operasikan secara maksimum, tetapi masih dalam batas kelestarian sumberdaya. 

Adapun persyaratan daerah penangkapan ikan menurut yaitu: 

1. Terdapat ikan yang berlimpah jumlahnya;
2. Alat tangkap dapat dioperasikan dengan mudah yaitu Memungkinkan melakukan operasi penangkapan secara aman dari benda-benda pengganggu (tonggak bagan, bangkai kapal tenggelam) tidak terlalu jauh dari operasi penangkapan sehingga dicapai penghematan atau efisiensi dalam penggunaan bahan bakar;
3. Secara ekonomis daerah sangat berharga atau kondisi dan posisi daerah perlu diperhitungkan yaitu daerah cukup luas memungkinkan suatu kelompok ikan tinggal (menetap) secara utuh dalam waktu cukup lama; dan
4. Faktor lingkungan (kadar garam/salinitas, suhu perairan) sesuai dengan yang disenangi ikan yang menjadi sasaran penangkapan, cukup tersedia makanan bagi semua anggota kelompok ikan, baik yang masih kecil maupun yang sudah dewasa.

Menurut (Alam Ikan 2), saat di lapangan untuk mendapatkan suatu daerah penangkapan dari suatu jenis ikan bukanlah hal yang mudah tanpa alat bantu, karena :

1. Luas wilayah lautan kita cukup besar, mencakup kurang lebih ⅔ dari seluruh wilayah nusantara.
2. Belum tebiasanya nelayan kita menggunakan data oceanografi untuk mencari daerah penangkapan ikan.
3. Terbatasnya peraltan yang dimiliki oleh suatu unit kapal tangkap yang dipergunakan diperairan kita oleh nelayan.

Menurut (Alam Ikan 2), alat bantu yang dapat membantu nelayan kita dalam mencari daerah penangkapan ikan dikelompokkan menjadi dua, yaitu : 

1. Alat bantu yang berasal dari alam

Yang dimaksud dengan alat bantu yang berasal dari alam alat bantu untuk mencari daerah penangkapan suatu jenis ikan yang berasal dari alam. Alat bantu itu sendiri terbagi menjadi empat, yaitu :

• Adanya burung-burung laut yang menukik dan menyambar ke permukaan laut.
• Adanya gerakan beberapa ikan lumba-lumba.
• Adanya buih-buih atau riakkan air di permukaan perairan
• Adanya cahaya spesifik yang dikeluarkan oleh suatu jenis ikan.

2. Alat bantu buatan

Yang dimaksud dengan alat bantu bantuan adalah alat bantu untuk mencari daerah penangkapan suatu jenis ikan yang merupakan buatan dari manusia. Alat bantu itu sendiri terbagi menjadi dua, yaitu :

a. Rumpon

b. Lampu

Cara Pelik Orang Asli Afrika Tangkap Ikan

Jika di Malaysia orang-orang kampung yang tinggal berdekatan sawah akan menangkap ikan menggunakan alat khas yang dipanggil sebagai bubu.  Kemeriahan musim menangkap ikan sawah tidak dapat disangkal lagi kerana kadang-kadang ianya menjadi satu pesta kepada orang-orang kampung.  Kini, jika di negeri Kedah teknik menangkap ikan sawah turut diperkenalkan kepada kepada para pelancong luar.

Paparan berikut adalah mengenai ritual pelik masyarakat orang Asli Afrika ketika menangkap ikan.  Jom ikuti kisahnya…

Sekali setahun perairan suci Tasik Antogo di Mali dibuka kepada para nelayan. Ribuan nelayan berbaris  di sekeliling tasik tersebut.  Ketika itu, ribuan nelayan akan  beratur untuk menangkap ikan di Tasik Antogo di Mali.

Sejurus selepas letupan dari pistol dibunyikan sebagai permulaan, mereka akan menyerbu secara tergesa-gesa untuk ke bahagian tengah tasik.  Seluruh tasik dipenuhi dengan para nelayan dan ketika itu, ikan-ikan benar-benar tidak lagi selamat!.

Untuk pengetahuan semua, tasik yang dikatakan suci ini hanya terbuka untuk  sekali setahun untuk para nelayan tersebut.

Gembira walaupun disaluti lumpur

Benua Afrika sememangnya terkenal dengan suasana yang beraneka ragam bagi pelbagai jenis tradisi yang sudah dijalankan ratusan tahun yang lalu.  Begitu juga dengan ritual unik satu ini.

Ritual unik atau pelik ini dipanggil sebagai Antogo di mana para nelayan hanya berpeluang menangkap ikan-ikan di tasik tersebut hanya setahun sekali bagi menjaga kesuciannya.  Danau kecil ini juga dianggap menakutkan bagi sesetengah masyarakat.

Dikatakan pada  masa dahulu lokasi tasik itu merupakan sebuah kawasan hutan hijau dan subur.  Danau, yang dianggap suci dipenuhi oleh ikan yang memberikan rezeki melimpah kepada para penduduk setempat. Namun, dek  kerana perubahan iklim dan perubahan masa maka kawasan ini secara berperingkat telah menjadi kering kontang serta  tidak lagi subur.

Oleh yang demikian, para penduduk setempat kini menghadapi masalah besar kerana kekurangan bekalan air.  Namun, pada mereka danau tersebut masih merupakan sumber air yang amat berharga bak emas berlian.

Acara Antogo  diadakan pada bulan ke-6 setiap musim kemarau, umumnya sekitar bulan Mei. Namun begitu, tarikh yang tepat akan ditentukan oleh ketua adat.

Sebagai menandakan tarikh menangkap ikan semakin hampir, maka sebatang tongkat akan dipacakkan di tengah-tengah tasik  tersebut bagi memberitahu kepada masyarakat di situ tentang acara yang semakin dekat.

Seterusnya, pada hari yang akhirnya ditetapkan sebagai hari Antogo, maka keluarkan ratusan orang berkumpul di sekitar danau Bamba itu.   3 kelompok terbesar yang dibentuk oleh keluarga yang paling dihormati dari  berbagai penduduk kampung  kuno Dogon.

Kelompok dari kampung Bamba sendiri biasanya yang terbesar.  Beberapa kelompok orang akan membacakan mantera dan pujian bagi dewa mereka. Setelah  mereka selesai membaca mantera, menandakan Antogo  dimulai.

Masing-masing bersedia dengan bubu untuk menangkap ikan

Masyarakat di situ lebih  selesa untuk memilih tinggal di sekitar batu, bukit-bukit dan kawasan-kawasan sunyi iaitu jauh dari sungai Niger yang  digeruni.

Namun untuk festival Antogo, semua ketakutan diketepikan dan orang-orang melompat tepat ke dalam air untuk mendapatkan ikan-ikan di dalam tasik tersebut.

Pesta ini sememangnya meriah tetapi jika di tempat kita jampi mantera tidak lah dilakukan kerana ianya syirik.  Jom tangkap ikan…!

Apakah terumbu karang? Terumbu Karang adalah bangunan ribuan karang yang menjadi tempat hidup berbagai ikan dan makhluk laut lainnya. Bayangkanlah terumbu karang sebagai sebuah kota yang sangat sibuk, bangunannya terdiri dari karang-karang, dengan ikan-ikan dan makhluk laut sebagai penghuninya. Apakah karang itu? Karang yang hidup di laut, tampak terlihat seperti batuan atau tanaman. Tetapi mereka sebenarnya adalah sekumpulan hewan-hewan kecil yang dinamakan polip. Ada dua macam karang, yaitu karang batu (hard corals) dan karang lunak (soft corals). Karang batu merupakan karang pembentuk terumbu karena tubuhnya yang keras seperti batu. Kerangkanya terbuat dari kalsium karbonat atau zat kapur. Karang baru bekerja sama dengan alga yang disebut zooxanthellae. Karang batu hanya hidup di perairan dangkal dimana sinar matahari masih didapatkan. Karang lunak bentuknya seperti tanaman dan tidak bekerja sama dengan alga. Karang lunak dapat hidup baik di perairan dangkal maupun di perairan dalam yang gelap. Apakah polip itu? Polip karang bentuknya seperti sebuah karung dan memiliki tangan-tangan yang dinamakan tentakel. Polip menyerap kalsium karbonat dari air laut untuk membangun rangka luar zat kapur yang dapat melindungi tubuh polip yang sangat lembut. Bagaimanakah cara karang makan ? Apakah zooxanthellae itu ? Bagaimana Karang berkembang biak? Pada tentakel polip terdapat racun yang digunakan untuk menangkap berbagai jenis hewan dan tumbuhan laut yang sangat kecil atau disebut plankton sebagai makanan tambahannya. Tentakel karang terbuka pada malam hari dan digunakan untuk menangkap plankton yang melayang-layang terbawa arus. Karang batu mendapatkan makanan dari zooxanthellae. Berapa lama waktu yang dibutuhkan karang untuk tumbuh? Selama satu tahun rata-rata karang hanya dapat menghasilkan batu karang setinggi 1 cm saja. Jadi selama 100 tahun karang batu itu hanya tumbuh 100 cm. Kalau begitu, jika karang yang tingginya 5 meter dirusak, diperlukan 500 tahun agar kembali seperti semula. Bayangkan….betapa lamanya !!! Kalau begitu, berapa umur sebuah Terumbu Karang ? Terumbu karang termasuk ekosistem yang paling tua di bumi ini. Tahap pertama evolusi terumbu karang terjadi kira-kira 500 juta tahun yang lalu. Terumbu karang modern ada sejak lebih dari 50 juta tahun yang lalu. Waktu yang dibutuhkan terumbu karang untuk tumbuh adalah antara 5000 sampai 10.000 tahun . Jadi terumbu yang kita lihat sekarang ini telah berumur lebih dari 10.000! Mengapa terumbu karang sangat penting artinya? Terumbu karang memberikan manfaat yang luar biasa kepada bumi dan seisinya. Manfaat terumbu karang bagi manusia adalah: Pelindung pantai dari hempasan ombak. Tempat asuhan dan berkembang biak bagi ikan, dan m enyediakan makanan, tempat tinggal, dan perlindungan bagi makhluk laut Menyediakan sumber protein bagi masyarakat Menyediakan lapangan kerja melalui perikanan dan pariwisata Sebagai salah satu sumber obat-obatan untuk berbagai macam penyakit. Hal-hal apa saja yang dapat merusak terumbu karang? Terumbu karang adalah ekosistem yang rentan dan mudah rusak. Terumbu karang dapat rusak oleh beberapa proses antara lain: pengendapan, pencemaran, penagkapan ikan yang merusak, sampah, gempa, bintang laut pemangsa karang yang disebut bulu seribu.
